The Bandama caldera is a Protected Natural Area, the most spectacular example of recent volcanism in Gran Canaria. It is a structure that was formed 5000 years ago, next to the ancient volcano of Pico de Bandama. Originating from an enormous phreatomagmatic explosion (when the lava comes into contact with subterranean water), its geological value is incalculable, as its walls clearly show the different stages of island volcanism.
The vegetation that inhabits the caldera, of a thermophilic nature, together with the wealth of species of flora and fauna, with the presence of birds of prey such as the harrier and the kestrel, make this natural monument unique in the Canary Islands.
